When he hangs the flag, the refs call time at 48 seconds! The fast balls zing past Syamaizan’s goggles as he runs for the 50! There is a large round button at the center of this blue-bunkered Dye Field and he carries with him his team’s hopes for a win.
The ground is slick and he skids sideways into the bunker. Jarring it with surprising energy & force, the bunker thunders and rattles from dozens of balls rocketing into the far side.
Sya is safe from the center field shots, but he catches the flicker of a hopper-there’s his mark, the snake player!
“When I wrap the bunker,” Sya tells me on the sideline later, “I see the snake. So I have to take him out first.”
He lifts his ’07 Ego and sights down the barrel, pointing it right at the shiny black Halo-but the Halo disappears a split second before his paint arrives!
As soon as that player pops up, Sya will be toast because there is no cover from the snake. He takes control of his own destiny & charges.
PALS
Two years ago, Sya played his first paintball game, at a field in his home town of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. New, he plays for Zealous, a Division III team in the Paintball Asia League Series (PALS)
KEEP GOING!
The snake player never saw Sya coming, he never heard him, and never suspected him until Sya put two sounds on his shoulder.
“Out!”
From beside the snake, well into Penampang territory, Sya sees their front center player’s back.
“I realize that I didn’t get hit,” he says, “So I just keep on going.”
He puts two balls onto that player’s back.
“Out!”
Then there is the far upper player, focusing on Sya’s back left corner player. Three balls, two balls, whack, whack, whack!
“Out!”
Now there are two left, and not a drop of adrenaline on reserve - it’s all surging through his blood.
Without hesitating, Sya charges diagonally towards his opponents’ start stations. There’s the fourth player, reloading behind the back center bunker!
“Out!”
There’s the last player, in the right corner bunker, focused, intent, not knowing he’s the last player left for his team.
Sya wobbles around as he runs, aiming across his center of balance, and puts paint on the last opponent’s goggles.
Then something clicks in his brain; 5. Five opponents are gone. He can run the field! In his disbelief, he looks back at his teammates. They’re advancing cautiously, shooting bunkers where there are no players anymore.
Sya grabs the flag, checking himself and finding no paint nor spray. Sya runs it in as the sidelines applaud.
When he hangs the flag, the refs call time at 48 seconds. Sya doubles over in exhaustion. With his team shooting cover fire, he had a perfect game.
They won the Asian World Cup, Division III. They won the PALS ’07 Series in DIII
Many things fade over the years, but that one incredible game will live strong, for a very long time-a lifetime.
